A young ultra orthodox Jewish man studying at the Yeshiva Ateret Israel, in Jerusalem, seen holding up his cellular phone certificating that it is a 'kosher' one. The kosher cellphone looks like an ordinary cellphone, can make and receive calls, and may have a calculator and alarm clock. However, it cannot send or receive text messages, browse the internet or take photos - all activities that could potentially involve behaviour considered "immodest" in the haredi community. The men studying at the yeshiva can be named "Toratam Omanutam", meaning one whose Torah study is his main occupation. In Israel, the term is used to describe a special arrangement for the Israeli haredi sector. The "Toratam Omanutam" arrangement allows young men enrolled in haredi yeshiva academies to either enroll for a shortened service period (4 months), or be exempted altogether from compulsory military service.
