MIDEAST ISRAEL PALESTINIANS
Palestinian family light lanterns and candles during a power outage in Gaza City, Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2007. The European Union says it will resume vital fuel aid to the Gaza Strip's electric company - money the bloc suspended because of suspicions that Gaza's Hamas rulers are diverting revenues. Palestinians hold banners during a protest against the closure of the Rafah border in southern Gaza Strip, Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2007. Gaza's main border crossings have largely been closed since Hamas's takeover of the volatile coastal territory in June. The arabic sign reads "36 dead on the border, who is responsible for their deaths?" Photo by Ahmad Khateib/Flash90
Dorian Paskowitz carries two surf boards as he talks to a soldier on the Israeli side of the Erez crossing with the Palestinian Gaza Strip 21 August 2007. Paskowitz, an 87-year-old American Jew and devout wave rider, decided to rustle up the support of Israeli companies and donors to buy 15 boards and gear for the benefit of the Palestinian children and peace. He came up with the initiative in his home in Hawaii some two weeks ago when he saw a picture of "two surfers in Gaza with a stinking board," he said. Gaza, under the control of the Islamist Hamas movement, has been under a crunching international economic boycott for almost 18 months, which deepened the suffering of the residents in the world's most densely populated and extremely poor area.
