Traditional Egyptian cotton and silk rugs are produced in factories, commonly referred to as schools, by young Egyptian children who are often forced to work long hours instead of attending normal day schools. The meticulous weavings of fine cotton threads are exceedingly time-consuming to produce, and the source of much pride. Small pieces often represent months of weaving.
