A parchment (klaf) made from a kosher species of animal displays verses from the Shema prayer, which begins with the words "Hear O' Israel." The prayer appears in Deuteronomy 6:4-9 and 11:13-21 and is a declaration and reminder of faith for the Jewish people. The mezuzah is also a symbol of G-d's watchful protection over the home and its dwellers. The parchment will be later stored in a protective case and hung on the doorposts of a Jewish homes.
