Neglected by her natural mother when she was a baby, the chimpanzee Na´ama, today a year old, was adopted by a family in Israel who raised her until she could join the group of chimpanzees at the Jerusalem Zoo. Na’ama was recently introduced back into chimpanzee life at the zoo, and is in the process of adapting to her natural zoo habitat, which consists of living with a community of chimps. As part of the gradual transition process, she was first put together with an older chimpanzee and her cub. Chimpanzees are very intelligent apes closely related to humans. They live in a variety of environments in western and central Africa. Chimps live in small, stable groups (called communities or unit groups) of about 40-60 chimps. They are an endangered species, since the forests they live in are cut down and used for farmland. photo by Yossi Zamir/Flash 90
